Digital Imaging Overview

Digital Imaging is set to revolutionise the Australian Radiology sector as it is doing overseas.

It is an environment where radiology images (X-rays) and data are generated, viewed, stored and linked electronically.

This new way of managing a radiology practice improves efficiency and sharing of information, leading to better quality of care and patient outcomes.

Most modern scans are captured electronically, for example, CT, MRI and Ultrasound. However, for the most part, these scans are then printed to x-ray [analogue] film from which diagnoses are made.

Picture Archive Communication Systems [PACS] allow radiological images to be acquired digitally and viewed on high-resolution monitors, eliminating the need for x-ray film. This has major benefits over traditional film-based radiology including improved workflow and efficiency. The ability to digitally manipulate and enhance images and share this information with other health professionals assists in providing better quality of care

  • Improved patient flow and reporting.
  • Faster and broader access to medical images in hospitals.
  • Can reduce patient re-scanning and length of stay.
  • Enable referring doctors on-line access to scans with reports e-mailed through Promedicus.net.

The key to a successful digital practice is the level of integration between the PACS and RIS
